Firm Profile

Audrey Matlock Architect is an architectural practice based in New York and working internationally. We embrace a modern sensibility that promotes innovation for both its functional and creative promise. Our work explores new combinations of material, structural, and spatial relationships that eschew predictability and embrace inspirational and poetic experience. The interaction of technological expression with space, light and form creates projects that are visually refined and functionally finely tuned.

Our projects cover a range of building types and scales, built in cities and landscapes with equal specificity. The urban context is envisioned as a vibrant work in progress where buildings expand on a complex urban history and animate the public realm. In rural settings, a symbiotic and sustainable relationship between buildings and nature intertwines architecture, landscape, topography and climate with human occupation.

Our firm is structured to promote inclusive participation on all projects, embracing broad client, design team and in-house involvement, especially during the design exploration phases. As principal and lead designer, Audrey Matlock is involved with the design of every project, working closely with the team through the duration. Our firm is organized as a studio, which means that each project has a team of varied talents promising our clients our full breadth of experience.

Audrey Matlock Profile

Audrey Matlock leads the design of her eponymous New York firm. A graduate of the Yale School of Architecture and Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts, her career began as an artist designing large-scale mixed media environments. In addition to museum exhibitions, she designed science and perception exhibits for the Exploratorium in San Francisco under Frank Oppenheimer. This seminal work led her to pursue a career in architecture. Today her work designing buildings and urban spaces combine her artistic and technological underpinnings.

Matlock was awarded fellowship into the American Institute of Architects, recognized as an Emerging Voice by the Architectural League, awarded a certificate of appreciation from the US General Services Administration for her contributions to quality and lasting achievement in Federal design and awarded the American Institute of Architects Vice Presidential Citation for Design Excellence. Residential Architect Magazine recently published a monograph of Matlock’s work, and she was just named by The New York Times as one of the ten architects whose buildings are shaping New York today. Her firm has won over sixty design awards.

Her academic appointments include visiting faculty positions at Yale University, University of Texas, Syracuse University, Catholic University, University of Pennsylvania, Parsons School of Design, Pratt Institute and City College of New York. An active member of the international architecture community, she frequently lectures and participates on design juries worldwide.
